Genesis - An Inside Joke In Detroit.
First off, we are from Detroit (affectionately known as the "D"). Detroit is a border town. We love our neighbors to the South - Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
There's this Journey song you may know, "Don't Stop Believin," that is played at every single Red Wings and the Tigers home game. So we all sing along with the song whenever and wherever it is played, and especially shout out the line "Just a small-town boy, born and raised in South Detroit." [click here]
That's cool but it always bugged us because there is no South Detroit. There is an East Side, West Side, even a Southwest Side. But there is no South Detroit. South Detroit is Windsor, Canada! [click here]
So, one day after having that thought for the millionth time, our founder dreamed up the logo that sums it all up. On a lark, he put the logo on a t-shirt.
The Debut. On July 16, 2011, the South Detroit Shirt debuted in Detroit's Eastern Market. Walking down Russell Street, people kept coming up to our founder saying they loved the South Detroit Shirt and asking where they could get one. Our founder, taken aback by all this, simply gave them his phone number and told them he would make them one if they just called him. There was no website and no business!
Later that afternoon at the Tigers-White Sox game, they played "Don't Stop Believing," yet again. Just as the crowd sang a "Born and Raised in South Detroit," Comerica Park broadcast the South Detroit Shirt on the Megatron in front of a packed house. We can't make this up! Immediately, our founder received numerous text messages from inside the stadium saying "Saw you on the megatron!!! I want a South Detroit Shirt!!!."
Later that night, our founder went to the Steeley Dan concert at the Fox. Tons of people said, "I want that shirt!" Others said, "Hey, you're the guy we saw on the Megatron!" Suffice it to say, people loved the South Detroit Shirt. So our founder created a women's shirt, debuted it on his girl and her sister, and people stopped them everywhere asking where they could get one!
Overwhelmed by the response and mobbed every time we wore it out, we decided to share the love (and the joke) and make it available to everyone!
